The Top of the Planet

A North Pole cruise is a voyage across the frozen Arctic Ocean to 90 degrees north, the point where every direction is south. There is no continent there, only shifting pack ice several feet thick, and only a ship built to break that ice can carry passengers across it.

For many years the trip meant a Russian nuclear icebreaker from Murmansk. That era ended in 2022, when Quark Expeditions and Poseidon Expeditions cancelled their 50 Years of Victory programs as operators left Russian waters. Today the way to the Pole for travelers is from Longyearbyen, on Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, aboard Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot, an expedition ship rated Polar Class 2.

How a North Pole Cruise Works

Voyages leave Longyearbyen and often spend time along Spitsbergen’s coast before turning north into the ice. Ponant has announced 12-night round trips for summer 2027, departing on July 27, August 8, August 20 and September 1, alongside its longer North Pole voyages. The line says each of those 12-night departures includes round-trip air between Paris and Longyearbyen, plus a visit to the research settlement of Ny-Ålesund.

Once in the pack, the ship moves steadily north for several days. Life aboard settles into a rhythm of lectures, watching the ice from the bridge and the bow, and the occasional stop for an ice landing or a walk on the floe. At the Pole itself, if conditions allow, guests go out onto the ice to mark the moment.

What Makes the Ship Different

Most expedition ships carry modest ice ratings suited to summer floes in loose pack. Reaching 90°N means crossing older, thicker ice, which is why the rating matters on this one trip more than any other. Polar Class 2 sits near the top of the scale used by classification societies; our sister site has Polar Class ratings explained. The ship’s size, power and hull form decide how far and how fast it can go, and the captain still adjusts the route to the ice around it.

Ice landings

Short walks on the floe, set up by the expedition team after checking ice and wildlife.

Zodiac and kayak outings

Offered near Svalbard and at the ice edge when water is open and calm.

Long days of light

In the northern summer the sun stays up around the clock this far north.

Is a North Pole Cruise Right for You?

  • You value the journey over landings. Days in the pack ice are spent mostly on board, watching the ice, rather than going ashore.
  • You are comfortable with uncertainty. The route, the timing and even the final approach depend on conditions.
  • You are planning well ahead. Departures are few and capacity is small.
  • You want polar bears too. Add time in Svalbard before or after, and read our sister site’s guide to Svalbard cruises for the wildlife side of the archipelago.

Greenland and the Canadian Arctic are separate expeditions; our sister site covers Greenland and Northwest Passage voyages. For a broader comparison of who sails the high Arctic, see the expedition cruise lines list on Explorer Cruising.

North Pole Cruise Questions

Is there land at the North Pole?

No. The geographic North Pole lies in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, on sea ice that is always drifting. Ships stop in the ice at 90 degrees north and, when it is judged safe, guests step out onto the floe.

Can you still go to the North Pole on a Russian icebreaker?

Tourist voyages on the nuclear icebreaker 50 Years of Victory, run for years by Quark Expeditions and Poseidon Expeditions from Murmansk, were cancelled for 2022 when operators pulled out of Russian waters, and we know of no tourist sailings on that ship since. Current North Pole cruises sail from Svalbard instead.

Is reaching the Pole guaranteed?

No. Lines describe these voyages as attempts. Ice, fog and drift can slow progress, and the captain will not take risks to reach a point on a map.

Will I see polar bears?

Possibly, especially near the ice edge and around Svalbard at the start and end of the voyage. Nothing in the wild is guaranteed.
